It involves you, a bottle of organic cold pressed Black Sesame oil from your herbalist or health food store, a kettle and a small and medium sized bowl to heat the oil in.
It’s so easy, this is how you do it:
Create some time where you don’t need to jump up and be busy for at least 5minutes.. 10 minutes is great.. 30mins is Awesome. You may want a towel under you.
Heat your oil (by placing hot water in a large bowl and a smaller bowl with your oil in it on top of this) and then rub the oil vigorously between your hands to warm it even more. Rub and press your feet for 5+ minutes, getting between your toes and around the ankles too. After massage you can put on an old pair of socks to help your feet stay warm, protect your carpets and floor from the oil and continue absorbing the oil. The socks will take on the sesame oil smell, so don’t use your best work socks. You don’t need to know massage techniques, this is a simple loving time with yourself. Do this morning and/or night. Highly recommended if you are having trouble sleeping and winding down at the end of the day.
Black sesame oil is an awesome friend in the colder months. It is warming, protecting and grounding and has been used for centuries in ayurvedic medicine and in self massage called Abhyanga. (Note: you don’t get the same effect from the “white” sesame oil in your kitchen cupboard!!). Black Sesame oil strengthens the tissues of the body, reduces physical stress, and helps your nervous system to slow down and relax for better and deeper sleep. Sesame oil is fantastic for balancing “Vata” disorders, or the effects of chilly wind invasion; worry, anxiety, stress, and a “hyped nervous system”.
The practice of Abhyanga is traditionally massing the entire body. So if you have time, you can massage the entire body with oil in long upwards strokes towards the heart, starting at the feet up to hips and hands in towards the chest. (ensure you’re in a warm/heated room!). When doing a whole body self-massage, allow 10mins+ to massage the body and if you can, another 10-20mins to allow the oil to absorb before you wash it off in the shower.
Either way, whether you try this as a 5 minute treat or a 30min self massage session, I highly recommend it!
I hope you enjoy some yummy, nourishing warm foot time,
with love and warmth, Amanda
